Chapter 7: Her Mother's Daughter

June walked across the grass slowly, past the balloons and the folding chairs.

Nobody spoke to her.

She stopped in front of me and looked at the papers in my hand.

"Mom."

"I wanted to wait until you were here," I said. "I couldn't. I'm sorry."

"It's okay."

"June, I did not want you to hear it like this."

"I know." She took my free hand and held on. "It's okay."

Calvin came around the cake table in his apron.

"June, sweetheart, your mother is under a lot of stress. Whatever she's told you, it isn't the whole story."

"She hasn't told me anything, Dad."

"Then let me explain."

"Dad." June did not raise her voice. "Take off the apron."

He stared at her.

"Go and get your keys. You can use the card for the Hartwell Inn."

"You can't ask me to leave my own house."

"I'm not asking you to leave forever." She looked at the guests, who were pretending to study their plates. "I'm asking you not to stand here with forty people watching you lie."

Calvin's mother put down her fork.

"June's right," she said.

Calvin turned to her.

"Mother."

"I raised you better than this." Her voice shook. "Go."

For a moment he stood in the middle of the lawn with his hands open.

Then he pulled the apron over his head, dropped it on the grass, and walked into the house.
