Chapter 9: Back Stairs

I went back to Linden Court at seven that evening.

I had a letter of notice for 4C in my bag and a spare key ring that still had my name on a paper tag.

Sullivan Lund was alone in the office, eating a sandwich over a paper towel.

He stood up when I came in.

"You look like you've been to the bank."

"I have."

"That bad?"

"A hundred and forty thousand dollars."

He put the sandwich down.

"Come on," he said. "We'll sit somewhere that isn't under the camera."

He took me through a steel door behind the mailroom to the back stairwell.

It smelled of floor cleaner and warm concrete.

He sat on the third step and I sat on the fourth, with the stack of papers in my lap.

I told him about the wire, the title company and the blue house.

I did not tell him what the house meant.

He listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he rubbed his jaw.

"You need two things," he said. "Proof of who made that request for the card, and someone who'll say so out loud."

"The form is in your drawer."

"It is." He looked at his hands. "I'll sign a statement. It says the form came to me with a note from the tenant and that I processed it without calling the leaseholder. That part is on me."

"It's not only on you."

"It's mostly on me. I read the signature and thought it looked wrong, and I let it go." He said it quietly. "I don't like that."

"Why are you doing this?"
