Chapter 12: The Baby Isn't Mine

Hayden came up in the lift between the doorman and a security guard, with his tie hanging loose and a cut on his chin.

He smelled like a bar floor.

Declan stood in the doorway in a pair of trousers and nothing else, with his arms crossed.

I stood behind him in his shirt.

"I want to talk to Cora," Hayden said. "Not you. Her."

"No," said Declan.

"It's fine," I said, and stepped around him.

I wasn't afraid of Hayden.

I had thrown a coffee at him.

"Say it in the hall, then," I told him. "Fast."

He looked at me.

For the first time in two weeks, he looked straight at me and didn't look away.

His eyes were red and wet.

"I never touched her," Hayden said.

"Who?"

"Tabitha." He swallowed. "Not once. Not a kiss. I've been with you, Cora, every night for fourteen months. You know that. You're the only person alive who knows exactly where I was."

I said nothing.

A cold feeling started in my feet and moved up.

"She's three months pregnant," he said. "It isn't mine."

The hallway light buzzed.

"Whose is it?"

"My father's."

He said it very quietly, and then he laughed, a horrible small sound, and slid down the wall until he was sitting on the carpet.

"It's my father's. He's been with her over a year. She was his before she was ever mine. My mother doesn't know. Or she does and she's decided not to."
