Chapter 14: The Cake

The text came while I was rolling out dough at noon.

It was from a number I didn't know.

"Tasting Thursday, 3 p.m., Kirkbride Grand pastry kitchen. Four hundred guests, three tiers. Fee forty thousand dollars. T."

I held the phone out to Declan without a word.

Rule six was one day old, and I was enjoying it.

He read it standing at the counter, and I watched his face go flat and quiet.

"No," he said.

"She wants me in her ballroom."

"She wants you where she can see you."

"That's the same thing." I picked a hair of flour off my wrist. "The wedding is in the room that matters, and I've been invited to bring a cake into it."

"It's a trap."

"Of course it's a trap. She's the one who called a photographer to a conservatory." I turned back to the dough. "I want to walk into the trap with a rolling pin."

He was silent for so long that I looked around.

He was watching my hands again.

"Say yes," Declan said at last. "I'll drive you."

"You'll wait in the car."

"I'll be a very quiet car."

I laughed, and the flour went up in a cloud, and when it settled there was white in my hair.

He crossed the kitchen and brushed it from my temple with the back of his knuckle.

Then his hand slid lower, behind my ear, and his thumb found the soft place just beneath it.

I had never known that place was anything.

It was a small touch, and it had a reason, and neither of us took our hand away.

I could feel his pulse in his fingertips, going fast.

His breathing had slowed down.

He was probably tired, I told myself.

He hadn't slept in two days.

"Cora," Declan said.

"Hm."

"I'll be in the car."

It was a flat line, and a polite one.
