Chapter 22: The Wedding That Wasn't
I told my father to put the papers in the register and not to speak to anyone.
"Give them to the lawyer on Monday," I said. "Today I'm busy."
Saturday was supposed to be Daphne's wedding.
At ten that morning I rolled into the parking lot of the Dayton Country Club on a small black Honda, with Joan beside me on her uncle's big Harley.
I had ridden twenty-two miles without putting a foot down.
I took off my helmet and shook out my hair and felt like I could do anything.
"You're doing great," Joan said.
"I almost hit a mailbox."
"Almost is a skill."
Inside, the ballroom was set for a hundred and twenty guests.
Ivory chairs. White roses. A band's drum kit under a banner, and a five-tier cake on a table by the dance floor.
Three people sat in the whole room.
My mother sat at the head table in her navy mother-of-the-bride dress, rigid as a statue.
