Chapter 10: The Complaint
"Mr. Falk?" the older officer said. "We have a complaint of assault against you. Ms. Wainright says you grabbed her wrist and threw her to the floor on the night of your wedding."
"Five witnesses saw it," Giselle said. "And there's a video."
Troy did not raise his voice.
"She swung at my face. I caught her hand and pushed her away. I didn't mean to push that hard."
"He admits it!" Giselle said brightly.
Doors had begun to open along the corridor.
A neighbor in a bathrobe leaned out to watch.
Molly stepped up beside him in her sleep shirt with her arms folded.
"Who are you?" the younger officer asked.
"His housemate. Molly Aubrey. I heard everything."
"It happened two weeks ago," the older officer said. "Ma'am, did you report it that night?"
Giselle's smile slipped a little.
"I was in shock. My family has a company to run, and I didn't want a scandal."
"You posted it online with a caption the next morning," Molly said.
Giselle gave her a look of pure poison.
"Nobody asked you, you little gutter rat."
"That's enough, miss," the older officer said.
"This is my family's property! He lives on our charity, and he attacked a Wainright. I want him arrested right now!"
"Giselle."
The voice came from the stairwell.
It was low and hoarse and very cold.
Everyone turned.
The junior assistant came up the last step, pushing a wheelchair.
Celia sat in it.
She wore a hospital cardigan over her suit, and the skin under her eyes was dark.
An IV bruise showed on the back of her hand.
