Chapter 38: What We Hid

Molly stood in their kitchen with her phone in her hand and played Dane's clip again.

Greta in the neck brace.

Her father's thumb stroking Greta's knuckles.

Troy came in from the hall and stopped.

Celia had made them both go home for three hours of sleep, and neither of them had gone near the bed.

"I watched it on the steps," he said.

"He's at her bedside." Molly put the phone face down. "He promised me in a bus station that he'd tell the police the truth."

"He's a liar, Molly."

"I know what he is."

Her voice cracked on the last word, and she gripped the edge of the counter.

"I have to tell you something," she said. "I tried to say it Sunday night, and Giselle's text came."

"I know. I had one too."

"Let me go first."

He nodded.

"The day Dane punched you," Molly said, "Judith's car picked me up in the parking lot. I went with it. I didn't tell you."

His face went very still.

"She gave me a check for half a million dollars and a house in Oregon. I dropped it in her teacup."

"Good."

"Then she played me a message from my father. He was already working for her." She made herself keep looking at him. "I said nothing, because you'd said no hands, and I didn't believe you could keep it if you heard his voice. I lied to your face in the gym doorway. I've been lying ever since."

"Is that all of it?"

"Yes."

Troy set both hands flat on the table.

"Judith's lawyer cornered me in the men's room at the courthouse," he said.

Molly's stomach turned over.

"He offered me Hazel by dinner if Celia resigned as trustee. And he said the old loan paper has your name on it. That he'd say you knew about it and married me to get out from under it." His jaw worked. "He said you were pledged."
