Chapter 5: Dragon Gate
Troy had four days to find thirty thousand dollars.
He had four hundred in his account and a noncompete that blocked every real job.
Molly sat at the kitchen table with the note in her hands and said nothing.
"I'm not letting them take you," he told her.
"It isn't your debt."
"No. It's a debt with your name on it, and I'm standing in the hall."
Molly followed him to the door that night and pushed a folded twenty into his jacket pocket.
"That's your last twenty," he said.
"It's bus fare. You can pay me back with interest."
"Then I'll pay you back with the interest."
"Then you have to come home in one piece to do it."
He promised, and he found the one thing he was good at.
The man who ran his old gym had given him a code, years ago, for a place that paid fighters in cash.
It was called Dragon Gate.
Troy had never used it, because he had never been strong enough.
He took a bus across the river to a warehouse with no sign.
The door opened to a wall of bass.
Inside, a crowd packed the floor, and every face wore a plain black mask.
Waitresses in bunny ears carried drinks between the tables.
Troy gave the code to the woman at the front desk.
She handed him a black mask and a paper tag.
"Mr. Falk? You're number six. The last match tonight."
"What does the last match pay?"
"An appearance fee for showing up. Another purse if you win." She looked him up and down. "The house takes bets. Some of our guests get rich in one night."
