Chapter 11: Lindy's Price

Calvin left at four to draft his stay, and I did not sleep.

At six, someone knocked on the door again, very quietly.

It was my sister.

She stood in the corridor in last night's emerald silk with a man's coat over it, one of Neal's.

Her mascara had dried in tracks, and her feet were bare.

She had carried her shoes and forgotten to put them on.

"Please," said Lindy. "Please let me in."

I opened the door and stepped aside.

She came in and stood by the window, hugging the coat around herself.

The sun was coming up gray over the Connecticut River, and it made her look about fifteen.

"I know it's you," she said.

"You said that last night in front of six investors."

"I know it's you," she said again, and her voice cracked. "You don't have to say."

I said nothing.

I sat down in the armchair, crossed my legs and waited.

"I'm sorry," said Lindy.

She said it fast.

"I'm sorry about the pearls.

I didn't think anyone would mind, Mom said you would've wanted me to have them.

I'm sorry about your room.

I was only in it because Neal said it was a waste, and I didn't think, and I didn't know about the papers until after."

"You said you did, at dinner."

"I knew about them after," she said desperately. "Not before."
