Chapter 16: I'm Not Dead
At ten the next morning six investors sat in Coleman Lane's small conference room, waiting to sign for their money.
I had slept three hours in a hotel bed with the heater on high, and I had not stopped feeling the lake in my bones.
I stood at the head of the table in my charcoal suit and my clear glasses.
The older man on my left was passing me his pen when the door opened without a knock.
Two county deputies came in first, hats in their hands, and behind them came Neal in a fresh suit and a lawyer carrying a briefcase.
He had shaved, and he wore the tender face of a man at a hospital bed.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize," Neal said. "This is hard for me. It's a family matter, and I'd hoped it could be private."
"Deputy," I said. "Can I help you?"
The taller deputy looked at his paper and then at me.
"Ma'am, I have an emergency custody order for a Gillian Weldon, also known as Faith Coleman. Are you Ms. Coleman?"
