Chapter 20: Mother's Offer
The holding room on the second floor had a metal table, four chairs and a window of wired glass.
A court reporter sat in the corner with her machine on her knees, and beside her sat a woman from the state's attorney's office with a legal pad.
"This is on the record," the prosecutor said to me. "Anything said in here is taken down."
"Good," I said. "I'd like it that way."
Calvin waited in the corridor, because I had asked him to.
My mother sat at the far end of the table.
They had taken her pearls and her hairpins, and her silver hair hung straight to her shoulders.
She wore the black wool still, wrinkled now, with a tag pinned to the collar.
She looked ten years older than she had in the church.
Her lawyer set his case on the table, and she did not look at it.
"Thank you for coming," said my mother.
"I didn't come for you."
"I know that."
"Say what you came to say."
