Chapter 6: Table for Seven

The restaurant was Marguerite's, the place with the candles in jars and the fish tank by the coat check.

Dean had booked the round table in the window.

At five to seven, my mother and father sat down on my left, and Joan sat down on Dean's right with her purse in her lap.

My mother touched my hand under the table.

"He has never once called you Roz," she whispered. "Not in five years."

"Mom."

"I'm only saying I noticed."

Dorothy came in last.

She wore a green dress with her blond hair curled, and Ricky wore a clip-on tie.

On her left wrist, the bracelet caught the candlelight.

Dean pulled out her chair, and he pulled out Ricky's too.

"Our family," he said, and raised his water glass before the menus came. "Thank you all for coming. It's been a hard week. I want to say that whatever happened, we're stronger when we're together."

Joan nodded.

My father looked at me.

I picked up my napkin and folded it into my lap.

The waiter brought bread. Ricky drew a dinosaur on the paper tablecloth with a crayon. Dorothy admired the dinosaur and Dean admired it harder.

I waited until the entrees were ordered.

Then I turned to my father and said, "Dad, would you take Ricky to look at the lobsters?"
