Chapter 9: The Ledger

Brooks stood in my doorway and did not understand what he had just heard.

"He's right?" he said.

"I want the hotels," Rafe said. "I told Sylvie what I wanted the morning after your party, in my office. I said I'd like to see your family owe someone who doesn't need them."

"You didn't say the hotels."

"I'm saying it now."

Brooks turned to me.

His face was twisted with something close to triumph.

"You see? He's been lying to you."

"He told me what he wanted before I signed," I said. "You told me you were testing my love. Which one lied?"

Brooks swung the roses at the wall.

White petals burst across my hallway and the stems hit the floor.

"You'll regret this," he said. "Both of you."

He looked at Rafe.

"My father will bury you."

"Your father is welcome to try," Rafe said. "Tell him the thirtieth is coming. He'll know what I mean."

Brooks stared at him.

For a moment I saw it, the thing under all that polish.

It was fear.

Then he turned and walked away down the hall, and the elevator doors closed on him.

I shut the door.

There were rose petals stuck to my sock.

Rafe was standing in the middle of my kitchen with a thorn in the heel of his hand.

I had not seen it happen.

A thin line of blood ran down his palm.

"You're bleeding," I said.

"It's nothing."

"Sit."

I took his wrist and turned his hand over under the kitchen light.
