Chapter 23: The Curb
On Monday at a quarter to noon, the doorman carried the last box down himself.
It was the doorman who had told me, two weeks ago, that I was a guest now.
He set the box on the sidewalk and didn't look at me.
"Mrs. Hallstrom," he said. "I was told to do it, and I'm sorry."
"I know."
"I still have your cookie tin from December. I never gave it back."
"Keep it," I said. "Eat the cookies."
He nearly smiled.
The curb in front of the building had filled up.
Neighbors stood along the glass front with coffees, and the woman from the ninth floor was there with her phone, still showing the camera.
Nobody pretended to be checking mailboxes.
Wyatt leaned on the Volvo across the street with his hands in his pockets, close enough to hear, and far enough that nobody could say he'd helped.
I had asked him to stay there.
I wanted to do this part standing on my own feet.
Gavin came out of the lobby at noon exactly, in the charcoal coat.
His car was gone.
The bank had taken it Saturday, and he'd come on the train.
He stopped on the step when he saw the box.
"Deanna."
"It's yours," I said. "It's everything that's yours."
He looked at the neighbors, and then at me.
"You can't do this on the street. We're married."
"We're not for long. The divorce is in front of a judge, and she will see the video."
"I'll fight it."
"With what?"
His mouth opened and closed.
He had stood at a podium and told two hundred people he was protecting their jobs, and now he stood on a sidewalk with a phone that no longer made calls.
