Chapter 5: Peg's Kitchen
I got to Duluth on a bus ticket I paid for with the sixty-three dollars in my coat pocket.
My mother was standing on her porch before I reached the gate, in her quilted vest, with a wooden spoon in her hand.
She hadn't put it down the whole time she'd been waiting.
"Get in here," Peg said. "I've got a pot roast, and I've got opinions."
The kitchen smelled like onions and rye.
She sat me at the table where I'd done every homework assignment of my life and put a bowl in front of me before I had my coat off.
"Eat first," she said. "Then I'll tell you what I said in the church group chat."
"Mom."
"I called that girl a name I haven't used since 1994."
I laughed, and it came out wet.
She came around the table and held my head against her vest, and for a minute neither of us said anything.
Then she sat across from me and pushed the pepper my way.
"I saw it all," she said. "I know Gavin's got money and a lawyer and a company. I don't care. Nobody puts my daughter on the internet with her mouth open."
"Mom, did you know Dad left me something?"
She went still.
"Wyatt Corliss told you."
"He came to Joanna's today. He said it's thirty percent of Hallstrom."
"Oh, honey." She took off her glasses and pressed her eyes. "Gavin said you didn't want to be bothered with it. He said you'd told him to handle everything. I signed what he gave me. It was always something for the lake house, or a form for the bank."
