Chapter 17: Seven in the Penthouse
I grabbed Columbo with one arm and my trench coat with the other.
I don't know why the coat. Five years of grabbing it before every show, maybe.
I kicked the prop-room door open and the smoke came in like a wall.
"ZELDA!"
She was on the cot by the stage, asleep in her mask.
I hit her with the coat.
She sat up, saw the orange glow through the kitchen doorway, and said a word that would have closed a show.
We went out the front, under the COCKTAILS sign, coughing so hard I couldn't see.
On the sidewalk Zelda turned straight around and pounded on the green door beside ours.
"TWINS! KID! OUT! FIRE!"
The twins live in the apartment over the club. The new kid sleeps on their couch, because twenty-two-year-olds in this city sleep on couches.
Three faces appeared at the upstairs window.
Then three bodies came down the stairs in pajamas, one twin carrying a houseplant.
"Why the plant?" Zelda screamed.
"It's the only thing I love!"
The fire trucks came in four minutes. It felt like forty.
