The detective photographed the screen before she touched it.

"That's Edmund," I said.

"That's two letters." She dropped it into an evidence bag. "I can't arrest two letters."

"He sent a man into his grandmother's kitchen at two in the morning."

"And the man isn't saying who sent him." She sealed the bag. "But I believe you, Ms. Fowler. For the record. I believe every word."

At nine the next morning, Gran signed her new will at the kitchen table.

Benedict and I were the witnesses. The lawyer's hands shook. Gran's didn't.

By noon Edmund had told two newspapers that his former driver was "a troubled man I let go weeks ago."

He didn't visit him. He didn't send a lawyer.

The lab called the detective on Friday. The brown bottle was digoxin. The same pills as my bottle.
