Chapter 15: The Board Table
Declan's POV
I drove to the lawyer's house at eleven that night, with Hallie's chapel video still playing in my head.
He lived in a quiet cul-de-sac in Upper Arlington, in a brick colonial with a porch light on.
He opened the door in a cardigan and slippers, holding a glass of milk.
He didn't look surprised.
"Mr. Ashworth," he said. "It's late."
"You hid a marriage certificate for fourteen months."
"I held a document at a client's instruction."
"Whose?"
He looked past me at the street.
"Mr. Draycott's," he said, after a moment. "I believe you know that."
"Say it again with a witness."
"I couldn't possibly."
I stepped onto the porch.
He moved back a step, and the milk shook in the glass.
I had never touched a man in anger in my life, and I stood there with my hands open at my sides.
"You drew up those papers in Reno," I said. "You knew what we'd done that night. You watched her sign. You watched her walk out of that hotel."
"I was instructed."
"You sat across from her on Monday and told her it had been filed."
"Mr. Draycott has been very good to me."
"Mr. Draycott is going to put you in front of a judge the first time this goes wrong. Have you thought about that?"
He didn't answer.
He gripped the doorframe, and I saw that his hand was trembling, and that he was not a brave man.
"Garrison told me this afternoon to destroy the file," he said, very quietly. "All of it. He says it was my error. He says no one will believe I acted on my own, so I should be ready to say that I did."
"And will you?"
"I have a daughter in college," he said.
