Chapter 22: Clause Four

The atrium emptied slowly.

The press stayed.

So did Dorothea, and Bea, and my father, and a long line of the crew with their hard hats under their arms.

Declan stood on the platform two paces from me with his hands at his sides.

He had resigned from the company he'd run for six years, and he looked like a man who had slept well for the first time in a month.

"You don't have to do this here," he said, low.

"You told me I could do it whenever I liked."

"I did."

"Then it's now."

I unfolded the pages and held them up so the cameras could see.

"This is a divorce," I said, to the room. "My husband had it drawn up on Friday and signed it. It says I keep half of everything he owns, and he asks for nothing, and I can file it today, tomorrow or never."

A murmur went around the crowd.

"I want you to know that he read both pages."

Bea laughed out loud, and put her hand over her mouth.

"Fourteen months ago, in Reno, he signed a paper he didn't read," I said. "Yesterday he signed one he read line by line, with a ruler. I'd say that's growth."

Declan's mouth twitched.

I turned the last page over and looked at his signature.

It was small and neat, and a little cramped at the end.

"Clause four," I said. "I decide."

I took the pages in both hands, the good one and the one with the metal in it.

I tore them in half, and I tore the halves in half, and I let the pieces fall onto the contract Garrison Draycott had never got to sign.

The crew started to cheer.
