Chapter 24: We've Met

I woke up on Monday morning in the big bed in the main bedroom, with one of his arms heavy across my waist.

The brewery lights had gone pale in the window.

The bed was a disaster, and so was I.

I lay there for a minute with my cheek on his shoulder and listened to him breathe.

My collarbone didn't hurt.

For the first time in a month, I could lift my arm over my head.

I did it, just to see, and his eyes opened.

"Good morning, Mrs. Ashworth," he said, in a voice like gravel.

"Don't you have a company to run?"

"I'm told the board met on Sunday and wants me back."

"And?"

"I said yes. On one condition." He rolled over, and pulled me against him. "That my site coordinator hands me her permit dates every morning, and I read them standing up."

"That's not a condition. That's a job description."

"It's a very good job."

I kissed him, and it got out of hand, and we were late.

Breakfast was eggs.

I hadn't planned it that way.

He cracked six into a pan in a gray T-shirt, with his hair still a mess, and I sat on the counter with my coffee and watched him do it.

He buttered a slice of toast.

He set it on a plate in front of me, and didn't walk away.

"Say it," I said.

"Say what?"

"The thing you said in Reno."

His mouth twitched.

He picked up my hand, the one with the gold ring, and pressed it flat against his chest, over his heartbeat.
