Chapter 4: Table One
The dress was red, with a long sleeve on the left side that hid the sling completely.
Bea zipped me into it and stood back with a screwdriver in her back pocket.
"If anyone says one word to you," she said, "wink twice and I'll come out of the bathroom with a drill."
"You're not coming."
"I'm already in the bathroom. I'm the plus-one. Dorothea insisted."
The Hartwell Ballroom had three chandeliers, a string quartet, and a wall of white roses spelling out two letters, D and C.
I counted three hundred guests before I gave up.
Dorothea steered me through them with her cane, nodding at people who didn't dare nod back.
"Table One," she said, and pulled out my chair herself.
It sat directly in front of the stage.
From it, I could see the head table clearly, and the man sitting at the center of it.
Declan had on a black tuxedo and looked like someone had taken the color out of his face with a pencil eraser.
He saw me at the exact moment I sat down.
His fork stopped halfway to his mouth, and stayed there.
Beside him, Camille turned to see what he was looking at.
She stood up, in a pale gold gown, with both arms open.
"Hallie! You came!"
She crossed the entire ballroom to hug me, and three hundred people watched her do it.
"I'm so happy," she said into my hair. "Dorothea, you sneak. You didn't tell me."
"I like a surprise," said Dorothea, and sat.
Garrison Draycott came over next, in a tuxedo that fit him.
He took my good hand in both of his.
"Our brave girl," he said. "Everyone in this room knows what you did."
"Thank you, Mr. Draycott."
"Garrison. Please." He leaned in, his voice low and warm. "I wanted to do something about the hospital bills. Our family would feel better if you'd let us."
