Chapter 11: Dorothy Lands

Sabina's POV

At 7:10 on Wednesday morning, Renee's doorbell rang, and Quinton was on the porch holding a suitcase.

Behind him stood a small woman with a silver bob, a long cardigan and a foil-covered dish.

She looked at me.

I looked at her.

I had seen her handwriting seven times. I had never seen her face.

"Sabina," said Dorothy VanDorn.

"Hello, Dorothy."

She put the dish in Quinton's hands without looking at him and stepped forward and held my face in both of hers.

"You're thin," she said. "You're thin and you're so pretty and he told me you were plain."

"Bryce told you I was plain?"

"He told me you were shy. I'd like to say what I think of that, but there are children in the house."

She hugged me.

It was a short, hard hug that smelled of lavender and airport coffee, and I stood there with my arms at my sides, and then I put them around her.

"I'm sorry," I said into her cardigan.

"What on earth for?"

"For not coming."

"You didn't not come. You were never told."

"I know. I'm still sorry."

"Then I'll accept it and give it right back to the right person." She pulled away and looked at my wrist, which was still yellow-green under the sleeve. "Who did that?"

"Bryce. In the lobby."

Her mouth went thin.

"Show me the other one."

"It's fine."

"Show me."

I showed her.

She looked at it for a long moment and said, quietly, "I raised that boy."
