Chapter 22: Everyone's Accounts

I knew both of them at once.

I had met them at a dozen dinners over seven years, and I had laughed at their jokes, and I had never once been introduced by my name.

They were "Bryce's girl" to them, and they were on Dorothy's porch the day after Christmas in wrinkled jackets, looking as if they hadn't slept.

One was tall and sandy, with a boyish face.

The other was stocky, with a gold watch he kept turning on his wrist.

Dorothy opened the door three inches.

"Mrs. VanDorn," the stocky one said, in a bright voice. "We're so sorry to bother you. We're Bryce's friends."

"I know what you are."

"We just want to speak to Sabina. Five minutes."

"She doesn't owe you five seconds."

"Mom," Quinton said from the hall. "Let them say it."

Dorothy stepped back and folded her arms.

I came to the doorway with a spatula in my hand, because I had been making eggs, and I did not put it down.

The stocky one smiled at me.

"Sabina. Hey. We've known each other so long. You know we love you."

"No," I said. "I don't think I do."

His smile slipped.

"Look. Things got out of hand. That group chat was a joke. It was guys being guys."

"It was a bet that I would stand on a bridge until your friend called."

"We never thought he'd do it."

"You paid him when he did."

"It was a hundred bucks!"

"It was five hundred," said the tall one quietly.

The stocky one swung around.

"Don't."

"It was five hundred. I was there. I paid mine, too."

He looked at me with his face red.

"Sabina, I'm the one who sent you the screenshot. About the party. I'm sorry I didn't send it sooner. I'm sorry I sat there and typed laughing faces."

Dorothy's mouth tightened.
