Chapter 19: Cedar Fork Answers

Rowan's POV

Twelve enforcers came across the courtyard in a line, and I stepped in front of her.

I didn't reach for tone.

I had promised Hazel I'd never use it on her.

I didn't trust my wolf to stop at twelve men and leave her out of it.

So I stood there with my hands open at my sides and let my wolf look out through my eyes.

The first two enforcers slowed.

"Alpha Larkin," one said. "Step aside. This is the Chair's order."

"No."

"You'll be charged."

"Then charge me."

Behind me Hazel's hand slid into my back pocket and stayed there, small and warm.

"I'm not going anywhere," she said, loud enough for the lines. "If you want me, you carry me."

The enforcer reached for her arm.

Then the ground started to hum.

I knew the sound before I turned.

It came up the north road beyond the courtyard wall, steady and low, the sound of boots on gravel in a long column.

Eighty Cedar Fork wolves came through the gate in flannel and work jackets.

Trudy walked at the front with her ponytail whipping and a hunting rifle slung over one shoulder.

I hadn't known she had one.

Behind her walked my betas.

Behind them came every wolf from the high country who could walk, even the ones with a limp or an arm in a sling.

Nobody shouted.

They climbed the Hall steps in a line, and they stopped on the top three with their arms folded.
