Chapter 6: Lavender

On the second morning I tried to shift in the yard behind the clinic.

Trudy stood on the back steps with a mug of coffee and a stopwatch she wasn't using.

"Don't force it," she said. "Think of something that makes you angry."

"That's every thought I have."

"Then you're ahead."

I stripped down to my shirt, knelt in the cold grass, and reached for Sorrel with everything I had.

She came up fast, and my spine bent, and my skin crawled.

Then it stopped.

A wall of something thick and bitter came down inside me, and she fell back, whining, and I knelt there with my hands in the dirt and my whole body shaking.

"That's the last of it," Trudy said gently. "It's still in your liver. Give it another few days."

"I don't have a few days."

"Then give it a few hours and a lot of eggs."

I laughed, and I hated that I was close to crying.

Rowan was sitting on the far fence, twenty yards away, with his back to me.

He had been there since sunrise.

He hadn't turned around once, not when I knelt, not when I swore, and I understood that was on purpose.

He was giving me the whole yard to fail in privacy.

I wanted to throw a clod of dirt at his head.

I wanted to cross the grass and sit beside him.

I did neither.

At noon a gray sedan came up the Cedar Fork road, with two Stonecrest enforcers in the front seat and a woman in the back.

It stopped at the gate.

The gate guard called it in, and Rowan came off the far fence and crossed the yard at a run.

"It's Ruby Kjellberg," he said. "She's asking to see you. She came without Ramsay, and her escort is staying in the car."

"What does she want?"

"She says she's brought your things." His face was unreadable. "You don't have to see her."
