Chapter 9: The Moot Hall
The Moot Hall stood on a bare ridge above the Council Stone, a long timber building with its doors thrown open.
Rowan stopped the truck at the bottom of the steps.
"I'll be at the back wall," he said. "Where you can see me."
"You promised that already."
"I'm promising it again."
Trudy squeezed my hand once, hard, and I got out.
I wore a borrowed gray dress and Trudy's boots, with my hair combed flat and the silver scars bare.
I had decided not to hide them.
The hall was a single room, and every bench in it was full.
There were nearly forty Alphas, in pairs and threes, with their Betas standing behind them.
Their voices dropped as I came through the doors.
At the far end, on a raised dais, an old man in a black coat sat at a long table with a gavel in front of him.
He had Ruby's auburn hair gone white and her calm, tidy face.
He was the Chair.
Ruby stood to his right in a white dress.
Ramsay stood at his left.
Neither of them looked surprised.
I walked down the whole aisle on my own feet.
Nobody said stand up, and nobody said come here.
When I reached the front, I stopped and looked at the paper on the table.
It was the transfer, with the red seal, and a pen lying across it.
"Hazel Hoglund," the Chair said. "You are here as a ward of the Stonecrest Pack, to sign a transfer of land you cannot lawfully manage. Do you understand?"
"I'm here as a free wolf," I said. "And I'm not signing."
