Chapter 9: The Cold Garden

Elora had been awake for a day and a half when Mirelle finally spoke to her.

It happened at dawn, in the little sitting room between their two bedchambers, with the door shut.

Mirelle sat in the window seat with her knees pulled up and her chin on them.

She had not been crying.

Elora could tell, because she knew exactly what Mirelle's face did when she had been crying and this was the other thing.

"I'm sorry," Elora said.

"For what?"

"For the kiss."

"It was part of the plan," Mirelle said. "You said so yourself."

"It was."

"Was it?"

Elora opened her mouth and then shut it.

Mirelle nodded slowly.

"That's what I thought."

"Mirelle, I didn't expect him to."

"You grabbed his coat."

"I know."

"You didn't push him away. You didn't even look for the pillar. You just stood there and let him kiss you in front of two hundred people and the Empress."

Her voice cracked on the last word.

"You're upset," Elora said, carefully. "Because of the plan, or because of Dacian?"

"I'm upset because you're my best friend and you kissed my husband, and I'm supposed to be fine with it, and I'm not." Mirelle wiped her eyes with her sleeve. "I made a rule. Nobody sleeps with the target. And I didn't think about the part where I'd mind."

"You never said you'd mind."

"I didn't know."

"You like him."

"I don't know what I like." Mirelle laughed, wet and short. "I can't tell if he's hurting or just proud."

"Maybe both."

"Maybe."

The silence went on a long time.

Elora crossed the room and sat down on the cushion beside her, close enough that their shoulders touched.
