Chapter 19: Clause Nine
He unfolded the contract on the stair rail and read clause nine to the room in his bright, clear voice.
If she walked, the forty percent went to him.
"So," he said. "Show me every text you like. My fiancée can marry me, or she can hand me forty percent of this house and walk away. Either way, I own a piece of what you're all standing in." He raised his glass to the three men from the fund. "And my friends own the debt. Tomorrow night, that's a controlling vote."
The man who'd stepped toward the door stepped back.
Ashton smiled at Solène.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart. I did tell you to read things."
There was a small sound by the counter.
The old man in the gray suit was getting to his feet.
He took a folder from his briefcase and opened it.
"Excuse me," he said in French, and then in careful English. "I am a notary, from Grasse. My office has kept the papers of this house since 1904."
Ashton's smile stayed exactly where it was.
"Wonderful. Then you can confirm the contract's valid."
