Chapter 24: Honey
The knot in the twine was old and stiff.
I picked at it with my thumbnail until it gave.
"He wrote it on the porch," Pearl said. "I found it the next morning, folded up in the lid of the jar. He told me to burn it."
"You didn't."
"I raised a fool," she said. "I didn't raise a liar. I put it in the pantry for three years and prayed you'd come looking."
She patted my hand, got up with a grunt, and left me alone at the head table.
The band at the far end of the hall struck up a fiddle tune.
I slid the brown paper off the neck of the jar.
Beneath it, folded into a tiny square, was a page torn from a pack ledger.
I knew the handwriting.
I had seen it on a hundred pack ledgers, and on three small labels that said Happy birthday, June.
I unfolded it on the white tablecloth.
June,
You said yes to him tonight. I stood on the porch and heard it through the wall.
My wolf knew you the second I smelled you at the harvest supper. That was a week ago. I should have said so then. I didn't, because you are about to be my nephew's wife, and I will not take what is his.
So I am not going to say anything. I am going to leave every room you come into. You will think I don't like you, and that is the best thing I can do for you.
If he is kind to you, I will be glad, and I will walk the ridge until I mean it.
If he is not, I will be on the ridge.
I don't have a right to ask you for anything. I am not asking.
