Chapter 13: The Wing Turns

The torches came down the road like a river of fire.

Wystan stepped in front of me.

Dorrit pulled the three young ones in close behind us, all of them barefoot in the snow in shirts down to their knees.

Two guards had come into the cut behind us, and one had a crossbow.

Celandine stopped at the edge of the quarry floor.

She looked at the empty chains.

Then she looked at me, and her face did something I'd never seen it do at court.

It went ugly.

"There she is," she said. "I told you, darling. I told you she'd come for them."

Drystan didn't answer her.

He was staring at the grey boy with the nicked ear.

"You told the court they were dead," he said.

"I told the court what Father told me to tell it." She laid her hand on his arm. "They're cursed. She cursed them. She's been singing that kitchen tune over the moors all year with her feral, and the boys caught it from her."

The Wing had fanned out behind them, sixteen drakes in blue and silver.

I'd been in the sky with every one of them.

The boy with the cowlick and the broken tooth stepped forward.

"I carried your coffin," he said to the grey boy. "It was full of stones."

The grey boy's chin was shaking.

"Tell them," I said quietly. "You don't have to be afraid of her now."

He stepped out from behind Wystan and looked straight at her.

"I know your voice," he said. It cracked. "I heard it from the nets."

"He's raving," Celandine said.

"Ask her what she did when the singing stopped," the sorrel boy said.

The girl spoke last.

She was the smallest of the three, and she didn't cry at all.

"You read the order to the guards," she said. "Cut their throats in the chains at midnight. Then you said, 'Such a pity,' and asked for your cloak."
