Chapter 25: The Moot
They came down all morning, a few at a time, onto the Moot field behind the Eyrie.
It was a flat white stretch of cliff top with the river far below and the Moot stone standing in the middle of it.
Each dragon landed in the snow, shrank, and was handed a cloak by a page.
By noon there were eighty of them standing in the snow in cloaks.
The clans on the north side in furs.
The Wing on the south in blue and silver.
The eleven from Coldmere stood with the clans.
The King sat on a dais with the prince beside him in a borrowed coat, pale, but on his feet.
The Chancellor stood at the King's right.
Celandine sat below them in white fur, with my torc on.
All along the Eyrie wall above the field stood the Chancellor's men in black and gold, with crossbows.
I was behind the ropes in my groom's cap, between Dorrit and Bettris.
The old herald stepped up onto the base of the Moot stone and unrolled a scroll so old it cracked.
"The Charter of Wings," he read, "the oldest law of Aldmere, read at every Moot since the first."
