Chapter 11: The Remembrance Dinner

Danielle crossed the street with her chin lifted and her eyes already wet, and half the parents at the gate turned to watch.

"Cavan," she said. "You came back."

He stood slowly with Otto on his hip.

"I did."

"You could have called. I'd have told you where we were."

"I called for two years."

"The number changed."

"Did it?"

She glanced around at the mothers, and her voice dropped to a trembling whisper.

"Please. Not here. Otto's had such a hard week."

"Then you shouldn't have posted his face to ninety thousand strangers," I said.

Several mothers looked at their shoes.

Danielle turned to me with a small, hurt smile.

"Audrey, I'd never talk to you in front of children."

"You made a video."

"I was upset."

Otto had put his face into Cavan's neck.

"Mommy," he said, muffled. "Can Uncle Cavan come home with us?"

Her smile didn't move.

"Of course he can. There's a dinner tomorrow night at the church hall. It's Daniel's remembrance dinner. We do it every year." She looked at Cavan with huge wet eyes. "You're his brother. You belong there. Please come. Say a few words for him."

"I'll be there," Cavan said.

"And bring Audrey," she said sweetly. "Everyone's been so worried about her."

It was a trap, and everyone at the gate was listening.

"I'll come," I said.

The next evening the church hall smelled of coffee and floor polish.

About sixty people sat at long tables set with paper cloths, and there was a photograph of Daniel on an easel at the front, smiling in a gray suit.
