Chapter 6: The Soft Voice

I did not sleep.

I sat on the guest room floor with my back against the wall until Otto's breathing went slow and even again.

Then I went downstairs to the kitchen and put the kettle on.

It was a few minutes after two.

Hoyt lay on the living room couch with his shoes off and one arm over his eyes.

I had let both of them in at midnight, because the rain had turned to sleet.

I had not let Danielle near the stairs.

The kettle began to tick.

"Is he all right?"

Danielle stood in the kitchen doorway in her socks, holding a blanket around her shoulders.

Her hair was dry now.

Her face was clean and calm, and her eyes were not red at all.

"He's asleep," I said.

"Thank you for taking him. I know it wasn't easy."

"I'd have done it for any child."

"I know." She stepped in and sat on the stool at the counter, tucking her feet under her. "Audrey, I don't want to fight. I think we got off on the wrong foot."

I switched on my phone's recorder and laid the phone beside the sugar bowl, face down.

She didn't notice.

"We did," I said. "Otto told me something tonight."

"Oh? He says all sorts of things."

"He said you told him Hoyt is the reason his father died."

For a second her face did nothing at all.

Then her mouth trembled and her eyes filled, and I watched it all happen in one breath.
