Chapter 14: The Call
Cillian got out of his car before I reached the curb.
He saw my cheek under the streetlight, and his whole face changed.
"Who did that?"
"Gwendolyn. In front of a room full of people with phones."
"Hannah."
"I'm fine. It's the best thing that could have happened. Roz got all of it."
He opened the passenger door, and I got in.
Roz's husband had gone to the hardware store, which was open until nine, for a new lock.
Roz had stayed on my porch with her arms folded, so that nobody could walk back in.
I needed my bag from the carriage house before I could sleep in my own bed, and Cillian drove me there without saying anything.
He parked by the pear tree and turned off the engine.
He didn't get out.
"Before you go in that house tonight," he said, "there's something I have to tell you."
"Can it wait?"
"No. I should have told you on Wednesday. I should have told you the day I met you in the hallway."
I turned in the seat.
His hands were on the wheel, and he was looking at them.
"On Friday the third, around two o'clock, a woman called the ward phone," he said. "I was at the desk. She said she was your mother-in-law."
I stopped breathing for a moment.
"She said your husband was stuck at a client lunch and wanted to take you home himself. She asked what time you would be released."
"What did you say?"
"I said four." He looked up. "I had been awake thirty hours. Her voice was kind. She knew your date of birth and your husband's name. It didn't occur to me to ask her anything."
