Chapter 22: On His Knees

Hannah's POV

My husband was on his knees on my front walk, with his hands out.

I had seen him in many poses.

I had never seen him lower than my shoulder.

"Hannah," he said. "Please."

Roz had come around the car and stood at my elbow.

Cillian stood three feet off with his hands in his pockets, and he did not move.

Across the street and up and down the block, the porch lights were on, and every one of them held someone watching.

"Get up, Chandler."

"Not until you listen."

"Then stay there."

"I lost my job." His voice was high and wet. "Mom won't answer my calls. I'm living in a motel by the airport. I made mistakes, I know I did, but I've paid for them."

"You've paid forty thousand dollars for a house you didn't buy."

"I'll do anything. I'll go to counseling. I'll tell everyone I was wrong. I'll sign whatever you want." He reached for my hand, and I stepped back. "We were good for four years. You can't throw that away."

"I didn't."

"Then what do you call this?"

"You threw it away at your mother's dining table with a fork in your hand."

He flinched.

"Roz called you four times that night," I said. "I know, because Shelby has it. I know what you said to your mother, and I know the word for what you did."

"I was scared."

"You were eating."

The porches were so quiet I could hear a leaf fall.

"I was losing our baby on a stretcher," I said. "I was frightened, and I wanted my husband, and I kept looking at the door of that bay."
