Chapter 15: The Keys

Anders read the petition standing in my doorway with a blanket around his hips.

He read it twice.

When he looked up, his face had no color in it at all.

"I didn't sign this."

"Your name is on it."

"My name is on a lot of things." He turned to the last page and put his thumb beside the signature. "That's not how I make an A. I never close the loop."

"Neither do I make a C that way," I said. "Look."

We laid the two pages side by side on the oilcloth.

Both signatures leaned the same way and were a little too neat.

"Someone traced them," I said.

"From what?"

I thought of the sideboard in Margit's parlor, and the cards she kept in a shoebox.

"The wedding card," I said. "The one we both signed for your mother. She keeps it in the sideboard."

He closed his eyes.

"Get dressed," I said. "We're going to the courthouse."

"Together?"

"Cliff can't take a report from only one of us."

He dressed in his wet jeans and a flannel of mine that had belonged to my grandfather, which did not close across his chest.

I did not laugh, though it was close.

We drove to town in my truck, and neither of us said a word about the night.

I thought about it anyway.

I thought about his mouth, and the weight of him, and his voice breaking on my name.

Every time I did, my skin went warm, and I looked out the window until it passed.

The county clerk's office was on the second floor, beside a case of faded trophies.

The woman at the counter had gray curls and a cardigan with a pin on it.

I laid the papers in front of her.
