Chapter 17: What I Did

Anders's POV

The foreman had worked for my father for thirty years, and he did not like paper.

I found him in the steam shed at six, bending a plank of white oak around a form.

He looked at what I held out and kept bending.

"What's that?"

"Power of attorney for the yard. Every account, every contract. It's yours until Sunday after Founders' Day."

"Why would I want that?"

"Because Signe cleaned out my mother's sideboard yesterday and drove off with her checkbook. She'll try the bank first. After that she'll try the yard."

He finally straightened.

He was a short, wide man with thick forearms, and he smelled of cedar and cigarettes he swore he had quit.

"And you?"

"I'm going to be busy."

"Doing what?"

"Telling the truth in front of two hundred people."

He took the paper, read it, folded it in thirds, and put it in the pocket over his heart.

"Your father would've hated that," he said.

"I know."

"He'd have been wrong."

He went back to the oak.

I stood there with my hands empty, which was not a feeling I was used to.

The sun was coming up red through the shed doors, and for the first time since the dinner, I did not feel sick.

That night I sat in the truck at the end of Sparrow Cove Road with the black notebook open on the wheel.

Cora had stopped me at note twelve.
