Chapter 10: The Burn

Maud set her basket down on the doorstep and did not come in.

"Ida," she said, sorrowfully. "I know it's been a dreadful week. But that's my tin, and I'd like it back."

Ida did not move her hand from the lid.

"I'll keep it until the Alpha sees it."

"Then let's fetch him."

Maud turned and called across the garden, in a voice that carried.

"Caleb! Caleb, over here, please! And the elders!"

I had not seen him coming up the path.

He had Ida's page of notes in one hand and four elders in grey cloaks behind him, on their way to hear me in council.

Half the pack had followed them, and by the time Caleb reached the cottage gate, there were sixty faces in the garden.

"What is it?" Caleb said.

Maud put both hands to her mouth.

"She's been in my things," she said. "Kestrel has, and Ida with her. They took my tea tin from the Alpha's kitchen in the night."

"I took it in daylight," Ida said, "with my own hands, as healer."

"And now they're saying there's something in it." Maud's eyes filled. "My own daughter's tea. I've made it for her every night since she was a girl. Caleb, I don't know what they've done to it."

I stepped past Ida into the doorway.

"Pour out a cup," I said. "Brew it from that tin, in front of everyone, and let someone drink it."

A murmur ran through the garden.

"It's tea," Maud said. "Anyone may drink it."

She said it without a flicker.

I would have admired it, if I had not wanted to drag her across the yard.
