Chapter 11: The Walk-In

At three in the morning my phone lit up on the pillow.

I read it. All of it. Every page. I'm so sorry, Luna.

I lay in my rented bed and watched the second R of the diner sign flicker on the ceiling until I fell asleep.

At nine the program director called.

"Dr. Mayhew," she said, and she sounded like a woman who'd had a very strange morning. "The Kenley Foundation has withdrawn its objection."

I sat up so fast I hit my head on the slanted ceiling.

"Withdrawn."

"Mr. Kenley called the Foundation's office himself at eight. The son, not the mother. Then he called me." She cleared her throat. "Your fellowship is yours, if you want it. Second year, starting Monday. And our clinic committee met at eight thirty."

"You're famous, Luna. The hospital likes famous. They want to give you one attending clinic day a week. Tuesdays. Metabolic follow-up. It's yours."

I put my hand over my mouth.

"I'll take it," I said. "On one condition."

"Thursday nights I'm not on call. Ever. I have a booth."

"A booth," she said.

"At a diner. I cook the late shift on Thursdays. I promised the owner."

Then she laughed, the first time I'd ever heard her laugh.

"Fine. Thursdays are yours. Welcome back, Doctor."

I put on my shoes and ran across the street.

Fergus was in the walk-in fridge doing inventory with a clipboard.

"I got it back," I said from the doorway.

He turned around.

"The fellowship?"

"The fellowship. And a clinic. Tuesdays. And I told her Thursdays were yours, and she said fine."

He set the clipboard on a crate of eggs very carefully.

"You told your boss," he said, "that Thursdays were mine."

"They are. You need a line cook."

"I need a line cook," he agreed.
