Chapter 29: The Ring Box
She was there in fifty minutes.
A small woman in her sixties with cropped white hair.
She still had her conference lanyard on, and running shoes under a good wool skirt.
She stood on the sidewalk in front of the Kitchen and read Ciara's letters on the new glass door.
THE KITCHEN. AND WE'RE STILL HERE.
Then she went inside and stood in front of the shelf of unclaimed shoes for a full minute.
"Explain the shoes," she said.
"They're waiting for people who never came back," I said. "So we keep them."
She nodded.
Fergus brought her a grilled cheese on a paper plate.
She ate it standing up in the back room, looking at the exam table, the formula fridge, the alley window, the fish tank.
The crab came out from under its rock to look at her.
"How many square feet?"
"Not enough."
"What's on either side?"
"The diner," I said. "And an empty bakery."
She finished the grilled cheese and wiped her fingers on a napkin.
"We'll take the bakery," she said. "And the floor above both. Clinic, lab, a teaching kitchen for families. The Kitchen stays the front door. Your Thursday booth stays a Thursday booth."
"And the shoes stay."
"Obviously the shoes stay," she said. "Who runs it?"
"I do. From here."
She shook my hand across the exam table, and her grip was harder than Fergus's.
The contractors started in November.
The bakery smelled like old bread for weeks, then like plaster, then like nothing.
The baby slept through drills in a sling against my chest.
Ciara named every contractor by his lunch.
In January the medical school gave me an award.
The award for clinical service, at a dinner in a hall on Locust Street.
