Chapter 8: Sister-in-Law

Delphine made breakfast herself on my first morning in the house.

She set out eggs, fruit and a pot of the tea I liked, and she had learned how I took it in one dinner.

"Two sugars and no milk," she said, pushing the cup across. "Colin used to complain about it. I thought it was charming."

"Thank you."

"I borrowed your perfume, I hope you don't mind. It was on the dresser in the blue room."

"I haven't unpacked yet," I said. "That was on my side of the dresser."

"Oh." She laughed, a small, easy laugh. "It's a habit. Growing up, Etienne and I shared everything."

She was wearing my perfume now.

It was the one Colin had bought me on our first anniversary, a pale green bottle, and I had never liked it.

"Delphine, you can have it," I said. "But knock before you come into my room."

Her face softened with hurt.

"Of course. I'm sorry, I only wanted to help you settle in."

"I appreciate that. Knock anyway."

She nodded, and she kept smiling, and her tea went cold in her cup.

Etienne came in, kissed my temple for the benefit of the housekeeper, and took the chair at the end.

"You two have been talking," he said.

"We were becoming sisters," Delphine said, and put her hand over mine.

I did not pull away.

That evening I practiced in the music room, because Monday was my first rehearsal with the conservatory orchestra and I was to play a Beethoven concerto cold in front of forty strangers.

I had been at it two hours when I felt someone in the doorway.
