Chapter 17: The Night Before
The Trench opened to the surface only at slack water, and the next slack water was at dawn.
Oren had said it on the Hall floor, with the flood running out around his boots.
"Until then Tuva is alive," he said now.
"He needs her mage's blood to keep his body together, so he will not finish her yet."
"Yet," said Ilsa.
"Yet."
They were in the boathouse, and the whole harbor had sent food.
Dockers' wives had left loaves and smoked fish on the step, and a crate of lamp oil, and a quilt.
Bryn had taken one look at the two of them and gone to sleep on her boat with a bottle and a loud yawn.
The tide breathed under the floor, and the new lamp threw a low gold light across the nets.
Oren stood at the window with his back to her.
"I have to tell you something before we go down."
She sat on the edge of the cot and waited.
"When I am whole, I will not need a contract."
"I told you in the cave, and I said it badly."
"I will not need your wrist, or your blood, or your body to stay on my feet."
"I will be the Sea Emperor, and the sea will answer me, and no one will be able to bind me to anything."
He turned around.
