Chapter 20: The Thirty
"It goes out when he does," Oren said behind her.
His voice was heavy and slow.
"A mage dies with her whale's last breath, if the bond is not cut."
"He is still breathing," said Ilsa.
On the altar, Caldrion lifted his cracked face and laughed.
It was a thin whistle.
"She stays with me," he said.
"She signed."
Ilsa looked at her sister's wrist.
The grey mark was shrinking while she watched.
She thought of leaving her.
It was a clean thought, and it lasted a heartbeat.
Then she pulled the knife from her belt and cut her own palm.
"What are you doing?" Tuva whispered.
"Be quiet."
She pressed her bleeding hand over the fading mark and poured her tide into it.
It was emptying a cup.
Her knees shook and the water went grey at the edges of her sight.
The mark steadied at a dim, weak white.
"There," Ilsa said.
"That is the only thing I am giving you, so hold on to it."
