Chapter 24: For Herself
The envoy of the Court of the Deep came up the harbor stairs at sunrise.
She was tall and pale as the inside of a shell, in a gown of woven sea-silk that dripped without ever getting wet.
Her feet left no prints on the wet stone.
Ilsa and Oren stood on the quay in yesterday's clothes, with the first gulls wheeling.
Dockers stopped on the planks to stare.
The envoy knelt on one knee in front of Oren.
"Majesty," she said.
"Four thousand years the throne has waited, and the Court has waited with it."
"The deep is yours again."
"Come home."
Oren looked at the water, where the sea was shining under the sun, and then at the woman kneeling.
"I will come," he said.
The envoy lifted her head, with a bright, relieved smile.
"At the spring tide," said Oren.
"I will sit one night in the Court, and hear what it needs."
"At dawn I will come back."
The smile fell off her face.
"The Emperor does not go back to the shore."
"This one does," said Oren.
"I have a house here."
The envoy turned her cold pale eyes on Ilsa, and stayed there a long moment.
