Chapter 24: Good Morning, Husband

The kitchen of the Drift was full of smoke.

Lorcan stood in the middle of it in his shirtsleeves, with his violet hair on end, and was doing eight things at once.

One arm held the frying pan off the fire.

One flipped the burned thing in it.

Two were busy at the kettle and the teapot.

One was reaching for the salt, and one was reaching for the bread, and one had a sleeve of the baker's son in its grip and was patting his shoulder.

The last arm was holding the door open to let the smoke out.

"Good morning," I said.

"It's not a good morning," Lorcan said. "It's a disaster."

The baker's son sat at the table with his face in his hands.

"He's crying," I said.

"I know he's crying. I'm comforting him."

"What happened?"

"I said yes," said Bess.

She was perched on the dresser with her bare feet swinging, wearing the shawl she wore to market, and she was glowing.

"He asked me to marry him over the porridge," she said. "I said yes, and then he cried, and then the pan caught."

The baker's son lifted his head.

His eyes were red, and he was grinning.

"I've been working up to it for a month," he said.
