Chapter 7: The Hearing
The High Council sat in a white marble hall in Denver, behind a bench with seven chairs.
I stood alone at the rail in front of it, in a borrowed gray dress, with my scarred wrists showing.
Behind me, every pack in the western territories filled the gallery.
My father and mother sat in the front row.
Jasper sat three rows back, at the aisle, where he had a clear view of the back of my neck.
Faye stood at the prosecutor's table in a black robe with a gold collar, and she did not look at me once.
"The Council will hear the petition," said the oldest elder, a white-haired man in the center chair.
"Thank you, Elder." Faye's voice carried to the back of the hall. "Five days ago, at the hour of her release, Calla Brennick stood up in front of two hundred witnesses and accused an officer of this court of murder."
A murmur went through the gallery.
"The Council gave her a lenient sentence five years ago, because she was young and because she was an Alpha's daughter. I ask that her sentence be doubled for slander, and that she return to silver tonight."
My father nodded gravely.
My mother stared at her lap.
"Does the convicted wolf wish to answer?" the elder said.
"Yes."
My voice shook, and I made it stop.
"I have no proof to hand you today," I said. "I signed a confession. I know what it says."
Faye's lips curved, a little.
"But I'm not asking you to take my word for anything. I'm asking for one test."
"What test?"
"Test Faye Netherton's blood against my father's blood, here, in front of this Council."
The hall erupted.
My father was on his feet, red to the roots of his beard.
"Objection! An Alpha's blood is a pack matter! This is a disgrace!"
