Chapter 25: Court
We were down the mountain in forty minutes.
Myra met us on the clubhouse steps with a sheet of paper in her hand.
"This was taped to the door," she said. "There's one on every door on the ranch. Somebody drove around at dawn."
It was a photocopy of a page from the Charter, the old brown handwriting gone gray on the copier.
Under it, in blue ballpoint capitals I knew now better than my own, Lon had written his notice.
A PACK COURT IS CALLED FOR THE HARVEST MOON, OCTOBER 11, IN THE INFIELD, AFTER THE FINAL.
THE ALPHA WILL ANSWER FOR BINDING THE KERN RIVER PACK TO THE PACK THAT KILLED HER FATHER.
IF THE PACK FINDS AGAINST HER, THE SEAT GOES TO THE BETA.
He'd signed it LON RYDELL, BETA, KEEPER OF THE CHARTER.
"Keeper of the Charter," Myra said. "He stole it out of the safe."
Torrey read it over my shoulder.
His mouth was tight. He touched the bite on his own neck without seeming to know he'd done it.
"Can he do this?" he asked.
