Chapter 28: Harvest Moon

Torrey drove us down the river road in eight minutes.

The pit garage light was on. The watchman stood in the door with his flashlight still lit, though the sky was going gray.

I got down on the concrete and slid under the #03.

The steering shaft runs down under the dash to the rack.

Halfway along it, somebody had sawed a groove into the steel.

It was neat and deep, more than halfway through.

It would have held for a few laps, then snapped under load in a corner, at speed, with the wall coming.

I lay there and breathed.

Hacksaw oil and cold steel.

Under it, old cigar smoke and hair grease.

I slid back out.

Torrey looked at my face and didn't need to ask.

"He was never going to tear up the notice," I said. "He wants my signature, and then he wants the pack to watch me lose."

"Or watch you die," Torrey said.

Roddy came through the door in his pajama pants and a welding cap, with Myra behind him.

He took one look under the car and swore.

"New shaft," he said. "I've got one in the trailer. Forty minutes."
