Chapter 18: The Fundraiser
Kaz opened the link with his thumb, still naked, sitting on the floor in front of the chair.
The page was called BRING KAZ HOME.
Above the title was a photograph of him at ten, in an altar server's cassock, squinting at the camera with a missing tooth.
He had never seen the picture before.
Gene had cropped his mother out of it.
"What?" Fintan said, behind him.
Kaz held up the phone.
Fintan read it standing, with the blanket around his waist, and his face got steadily harder.
It was written in the first person.
My name is Gene Wojcik and I am a single father.
My wife died six years ago and I have raised my son alone ever since.
He is eighteen but he has never been strong.
He is a good boy who has been taken in by people who are using his talents.
He is living in a church with a stranger, working for no pay, sleeping on a cot.
