Chapter 19: Over the Bakery
The apartment over the Polish bakery in Greenpoint had one bedroom, one window and a radiator that knocked all day.
It smelled of yeast and onions and floor wax.
Averett stood in the middle of the living room with a bandage over his eye and looked at everything.
There was a couch with a blanket folded on the arm, and a small kitchen with two pans on hooks.
On the shelf over the television stood a row of dented trophies, and next to them a championship belt in a plastic case.
"You kept it," he said.
"It was my grandfather's idea."
"Who's she?"
He pointed to a framed photograph by the lamp.
It showed a small, round woman in an apron, laughing at the camera with a wooden spoon in her fist.
"My mother," Jarek said. "She's in Pittsburgh. She thinks I'm a doorman at a hotel."
"You're a doorman at a hotel," Averett said.
"I was a bodyguard for a billionaire."
"Same thing, in the right light."
Jarek laughed, and the sound filled the little room.
It was Saturday, eleven in the morning, and the gala was ten hours away.
The doctor had said rest.
Averett had said yes, and then had asked to be taken to the only place in New York where Tindle's people had never been.
"Sit," Jarek said. "Don't touch anything. I'm cooking."
"I thought I was the cook."
"You have a concussion. You're the audience."
He rolled his sleeves over the ink and took a bowl of potatoes from the counter.
Averett sat at the small table and watched him work.
It was a different kind of watching than he had done in the Tower.
